How Cultural Competence and Social Determinants of Health Impact Health Care and What To Do About It

Lack of diversity and cultural competence among health care providers, social barriers such as lack of technology or transportation, and lack of patient engagement reinforce health inequity and contribute to worse health outcomes in many diverse patient populations. Technology and lessons from the pandemic (such as digital health solutions and pharmacy providers) can help bridge the health equity gap, which has far reaching consequences that improve the lives of individuals and promote stable productive communities.

Key Takeaways:

1)         Lack of diversity among health care providers hurts all of us.
2)         Improving health equity requires more than medical knowledge, it requires cultural competence among health care providers.
3)         By considering the context of how people access and receive health care, and increased use of technology, we can help change the social determinants of health and improve health outcomes for many patient populations.
