Exposing the Cracks: Litigation Case Studies and Environmental Issues in Plastic Construction Materials

The recent introduction of plastic and sealant materials into widespread use in the building and construction industry has resulted in products that are often light weight, easy to install, and less expensive than their non-plastic counterparts. These attributes, among others, make plastic building materials an appealing option for contractors, architects, and designers. However, an increasing public awareness of the impacts of plastic pollution on the environment have led to greater scientific scrutiny and legislative attention to this wide range of products. In this Webinar, we will present case studies and common failure mechanisms involving plastics and sealants in building and construction applications (i.e., dripping window sealant, fractured water pipes, etc.), a discussion of considerations for those specifying and installing plastic-based materials, as well as highlight potential fate and effects of plastics and polymers in the environment, including recent legislative developments.

Takeaways:

  1. End-use environmental influences, such as UV exposure or contact with neighboring materials, can impact plastic performance.
  2. Unintentional release of plastics to the environment can have negative ecological effects and run afoul of existing and proposed regulations.
  3. When considering plastic material selection to ensure successful long-term use, it is helpful to understand the end-use application and to follow the manufacturers guidance.
  4. What liabilities may be imposed on constructors, designers, general contractors, subcontractors and building owners for the possible failures or exposures created by these products.
